WHAT IS SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION and FACTOR AFFECTING SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION .
Spontaneous combustion
It is the self heating of coal or other carbonaceous material due to oxidation at ordinary atmospheric temperature.
FACTOR AFFECTING SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION
Broadly there are two factors that affect the spontaneous combustion.
- INTRINSIC FACTOR (coal characteristics)
INTRINSIC FACTOR
1. Rank of coal
Coal of different rank have different capabilities to absorb oxygen.
The rate of oxidation decreases with increasing the rank of coal, Hence low rank coals have high risk of spontaneous combustion.
2. Presenses of pyrite
Presence of pyrite increases the potential of spontaneous combustion .
3. Freshness of exposed coal surface
The rate of oxidation of exposed fresh surface of coal decreases continuously during the progress of oxidation with time.
4. Volatile matter content
Increases the volatile content of coal increases the rate of oxidation, that's why increases the potential of spontaneous combustion.
5. Thermal conductivity of coal
Coal with law thermal conductivity are more liable or risk to spontaneous combustion.
EXTRINSIC FACTOR
1. Seam thickness
Thick coal seam are more prone to spontaneous combustion because the working of these seam is invariably accompanied by high losses of coal in the goaf area.
2. Depth of ore
When a coal seam under a shallow overburden is mined the goaf areas get connected to the surface by crack and fissures So air and water from the surface can gain access to the coal increases the potential of spontaneous combustion.
3.Coal friability
Friability coal which easily crushed and broken into smaller size and more liable to spontaneous combustion.
4. Geological distrubances
Presenses of fault in coal seam allow air and water to the coal seam and help in development of heating in coal mines that is leads to spontaneous combustion.
5. Presence of multi seam
When multi seam are worked , the crack and fissures developed increases the potential of spontaneous combustion of surrounding seam .
