What is slope failure and types of slope failure?

 Definition of slope stability  

Slope stability is defind as the potential of soil covered slope to withstand and undergo movement.

It is determine by the balance of shear strength and shear stresses.

Types of slope failure

  1. Plane failure
  2. Wedge failure
  3. Circular failure
  4. Topppling failure
Plane failure

It occurs along the various types of discontinuities on the bench scale.



Circular failure

This types of deep seated failure occurs when a slope is excavated in soil or soft rock formation,in which the mechanical properties are not dominated by clearly defined structural features.
Failure occurs along surface that approach a circular shape.

Wedge failure

It is due to two intersecting discontinuities.large scale wedge failure may occur in several benches.

Toppling failure

It is general occurs in hard rock formations which can form columnar structure separated by dipping dis continuities.

Causes of slope failure
  1. Improper planning and designing of a pit slope.
  2. Keeping the overall  slope more than angle of repose.
  3. Improper factor of safety.
  4. Use of heavy earth moving machineries.
  5. Improper drainage system.
  6. Force due to the earthquake such as vibration,leading to liquefaction of solid and flow slides.
  7. Slope modification.
Factors affecting slope failure
 1-Dynamic loading caused by playing HEMM plasting , earthquakes etc.shear stress are momentarily increased as a result of vibration in the mass.
2-Water pressure in the joint has probably been responsible for more frequent slope failure.
3-The most serious problem in rock slope failure often is location orientation and properties of structural discontinuities of the rock mass.
